Graham Monro is one of Australia’s premier wedding photographers. Based in Sydney for more than 25 years, here he shares his expert advice for a memorable day and beautiful images.
What’s your number one piece of advice for couples looking for a photographer?
Choose a photographer that will give you the style and quality you are looking for. Don’t skimp on photography – it is the one lasting memory of your day and you can’t re-do it.
What are the essential shots on the day?
All shots are incredibly important, but these are what most couples ask for: glamour shots of the bride; amazing location photos; details of the day; and family and special guests photos.
What do you think contributes to a memorable wedding?
Raw emotion is one of the biggest contributors. It really comes across in our images when our couples and their guests are real in front of the camera. Weddings that have great atmosphere and mood are always memorable. Fantastic music or entertainment has a lasting impression, as does amazing styling. Food is also a big factor in people enjoying the day. Great wedding planners and stylists will light venues well and it is amazing for photos. We prefer to see people enjoy themselves rather than be on their phones – be present in the moment as the day goes so fast. We can also Instagram for our couples! Check your contracts (make sure you have one) and check they have a backup plan or back-up photographers, just in case! I have been a photographer for over 40 years. After a commercial career in photography shooting ad campaigns and magazine covers, I kept getting asked to photograph weddings and family portraits. I quickly realised how much I liked it. We have been at the top of our game at GM Photographics for over 25 years now.
How would you describe your style?
Our style has been described as photojournalistic with a hint of glamour; it is classic and natural. We capture the day as it unfolds and this gives the couple beautiful, candid imagery. Our team is able to create images that are of a composed nature, yet free from stiff posing.
What do you love about shooting weddings?
We are invited to be a part of a couple’s most special day. We have the privilege of being with them at their most intimate moments from start to nish. We get to meet all sorts of people, join in their celebrations and experience their emotions. There aren’t too many jobs that allow you to see the real essence of people. It’s great to push the boundaries and look for something new at each wedding.
Is it helpful for a bride to collect references?
Yes, definitely. It gives us a better idea of what they like and what their expectations are. The more references the better.
What can a bride do to make your job easier?
A shot list is great, and an allocated helper on the day to organise friends and family for group photos.
