After Another Year of COVID-19 Lockdowns, Let’s Get Together with the Extended Family

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected our relationships in both positive and challenging ways. Lockdowns force us to stay at home and encourage us to engage with our family members and make the most of our time with each other. Most of us spend more time together at mealtimes, have more dinner table conversations, and share household chores together.

On the other hand, enjoying the safety and comfort of our homes means fewer chances for us to connect with people outside of them. It is unavoidable to miss our beloved circle of friends and, of course, extended families.

Having fewer opportunities to spend quality time with people beyond the nuclear family unit can be extra challenging for children and older adults. During their formative years, kids benefit from connecting with others. Conversely, the lack of positive interactions with good influences can strain their social skills outside their comfort zone. For grandparents, it is normal to feel anxious as they cannot make the most of their limited energy with their loved ones.

Fortunately, technology and several secure physical spaces have become generous. These allow us to share and enjoy each other’s presence and companies as long as we follow COVID-19 safety protocols and maintain a responsible distance from others. Some activities extended families can enjoy together include:

  • Scheduling and committing to phone calls and video calls with each other;
  • Taking virtual tours of galleries and historical places together;
  • Going for walks or biking together;
  • Visiting each other’s residences, especially during special occasions; and
  • Having extended family photoshoots.

The days are long, but the years are short. These words have become more accurate since the start of the pandemic. That is why it has become crucial not to just spend time with our loved ones. Documenting fleeting moments shared together through an extended family photoshoot has its own perks, too.

#1. An extended family photoshoot makes way for a family reunion.

As mentioned, an extended family session allows us to bond while having our photographs taken while we make memories. In contrast to other activities, it invites everyone. Admit it, most of us love pictures, and when it comes to family photographs, no one wants to miss out! In an extended family photoshoot, your whole brood will likely be there!

#2. You will have photographs of different family groups.

In an extended family, there are various unique groups: the entire family, the nuclear families, the married couples, the siblings, the grandchildren, and the different combinations of these! In short, you can make the most of it as it is an all-in-one session!

#3. Gifts for each other are already guaranteed.

They say time is the most precious gift you can give your loved ones. While gracing each other with love and presence is already a given in a session, the photographs also serve as gifts your family cannot get just anywhere. These unique gifts can serve as heartwarming reminders that say that despite the distance, you are never alone and that your family is always there for you in these trying times.

#4. Your family gets to have keepsakes and heirlooms.

Family photographs are indeed priceless treasures to keep. Especially when you have photoshoots from time to time, you will see how your family as a whole and everyone in it has evolved. Not only will you be able to share these documentations with each other, but you can also pass these down to the generations after you.

#5. You will thank yourself.

Time flies, and things change. Kids grow up, and nana and grandpa’s hair turns white. Unexpected circumstances such as a family member’s relocation can make it impossible for them to join the next family photoshoot. Hence, take advantage of every opportunity to unite for a session. You will thank yourself for not letting the pandemic get in the way of you having family photographs of everyone! These will remind you of the most beautiful and invaluable thing in life.

Show your love and celebrate your family’s strength in these difficult times by reuniting for a multigenerational photoshoot!
